The mission of the U.S. Center for Mental Health & Sport (USC-MHS) is to bring optimum mental health to sport communities. We recognize that mental health challenges are one of the leading burdens of disease in the United States with 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 6 children experiencing a mental health disorder in any given year.

The US Surgeon General has recently released a health advisory regarding the immediate need to address youth mental health and encourages organizations outside of clinical health service providers to become involved with mental health initiatives to save lives and help reduce the rates of suicide, which have been on the rise since 1999 and were 35% higher in 2021 than they were 22 years earlier.

The USC-MHS is guiding sport organizations to do just that -- to improve the mental health of their communities by providing mental health training, resources, and pathways to additional support to athletes, coaches, parents and family members, administrators, sports officials, and anyone else involved in the sport community. Our services include mental health awareness training, access to a network of mental health service providers who also have expertise in sport, educational content on mental health distributed through blogs and newsletters, and we are in the process of developing a mental health and sport certification program. The USC-MHS is also committed to the advancement of mental health and sport research in order to ensure all recommendations and resources are evidence-based.
